WordPress for Beginners

About five years ago, when I decided to launch a personal blog, I vetted almost every high profile CMS and decided on WordPress for my blog and I'm so glad I did. I knew I wanted the ability to add custom code and edit CSS and WordPress allows for complete customization. Please note: I am not a web developer and I had never coded before, however, WordPress has incredible tutorials and even templates that you can apply and modify to your website that are extremely modern, sophisticated, clean, and also affordable. The plugins are endless - there's truly a plugin for anything you can think of and WordPress integrates seamless with my affiliate marketing platform, LikeToKnow.it so I have the ability to add custom feeds, HTML code for widgets, and a live Instagram feed to earn commission from products I link. As a beginner, I dedicated a lot of time learning as much as I could about WordPress and would never switch to a different CMS. Their learning tools and tutorials are excellent resources for self-education. I also really enjoy the new live editing dashboard when adding new content.

I'm a beginner so editing CSS was a little tricky for me when I was first beginning. I purchased and applied a template and wanted to further add customizations and finally found the right CSS code. However, I wish the templates had a bit of a drag and drop layout feature the way Squarespace makes it so simple to design, especially for beginners. However, WordPress is one of the best and most sophisticated CMS tools available on the market and as someone who isn't a web dev, I respect the features and am excited to learn more. It's mostly user error from my end because our dev team raves about WordPress.

Great option for Small Businessess With Big Dreams

Opmerkingen: Overall I like using WordPress and I have tried some if not most of the prepaid pay-as-you-go platforms that do all the backend stuff for you, and as good as they are, they don't compare... WordPress sites are dynamic and open to use for whatever business you have one site: a blog, store, education platform, job board, social community or all of of the above.

Pluspunten:

Free to use, open source software, tons of free plugins, and tons of free themes and templates. This software has been around for a long time, so many designers, developers, and freelancers are available to help build, fix, or otherwise help with any part of using this software. There are also videos on YouTube from different producers worldwide so you have options.

Minpunten:

It is a free open-source software so it is also open to and vulnerable to hacking especially if left unattended or with outdated plugins and themes. This type of site is not for someone looking for an "easy" solution because it requires either time or money to keep it updated and to catch any unwanted visitors sooner rather than later.

Great tool but you better know coding

Opmerkingen: I’ve worked on websites created by others on Wordpress. I have been able to update things and create blogs. I was not able to make changes because of coding limitations.

Comprehensive website platform with many plug-ins and a large community of users to learn from

You need to know coding in order to use it.

If you're building websites use WordPress it's a must to help you get started and familiar with building websites.

Opmerkingen: My overall experience with WordPress is pretty good I've been using them for years took me a while to learn how to use a platform as there's a little learning curve but this is the leading standard platform if you're building websites you should start with WordPress as if you master this every other builder will be easy for you to use as most nowadays are drag and drop.

Pluspunten:

WordPress is a universal platform They also have many apps and plugins that you can use with the system there's a slight learning curve with WordPress it's more for advanced users but they do have plugins that allow it even newbies to get started so I love this.

Minpunten:

I wish WordPress was a little easier to use for newbies but through their plugins system they have pretty much solved this problem.

WordPress - web power

Opmerkingen: I like WordPress because is a versatile content management system. Is well documented and support is five stars.

Pluspunten:

The most I like that you have a lot of options in terms of themes and plugins. With certain themes I can transform my WordPress setup into a powerful platform for my needs. Themes saves you a lot of time and money with the design and plugins can add a lot of useful functionalities.

Minpunten:

There are no things I dislike and worth mentioning.

Good to build with

Wordpress is a great way to get your feet wet with design. Learn the ins and outs.

Very limited unless uou pay for templates but then you have to pay for other plugins to have a high performing site.

My Experience with WordPress

Opmerkingen: My overall experience with WordPress is great. I have 3 blog active sites with them currently.

Pluspunten:

I like how easy it is to use, once you understand the platform. I started using WordPress in 2014 when I switched from Wix initially. I now use both platforms for different purposes.

Minpunten:

It can be frustrating and somewhat overwhelming for someone who is new to the platform.

Seamless Learning Curve

Support from forum is not for beginners.

Great for Clients

Opmerkingen: As a front-end developer and user experience designer, I think WordPress is a great tool for creating client content. It offers easy customization options and smooth integration of plugins and themes. Additionally, its user-friendly interface makes it accessible for clients to manage their own content updates without relying heavily on developers.

Easy to get started. but there is a learning curve for advanced features

Plugin Compatibility: Sometimes plugins may conflict with each other or with themes.

I've used Wordpress to build websites for several companies over the last decade and I've always found that the program is always up to date, free of bugs, and customer service has always assisted in a timely manner. The applications that can be used on the platform seem endless and for the DIY'er it simply cant be beat.

Minpunten:

The vast amount of plugins can sometime be a double edged sword in that I can sometimes get lost in which plugins i need or what to use and it can be a bit overwhelming at times. My suggestion would be to research prior to uploading any plugins and have a plan in place to fulfill your needs. Avoid exploring too much, as tempting as it is.

Review for WordPress

Opmerkingen: Overall,I would say it is a great platform especially for Digital Marketers who are SEO consultants.

WordPress is a great option when Search Engine Optimization(S.E.O.)is in the mind of the designer/builder. My clients desire is to rank well on google,WordPress is my go to platform when I want to build my Clients website. WordPress is easy to customize and has lots of templates to choose from when building a website. It is easy to use for a beginner who just started his/her Website building. It has lots of Plugins,extensions and Features which makes it easy for me to build any kind of website I want. It is relatively free and easy to navigate with a great interface.

Minpunten:

The security issue is one of my concerns. WordPress sites are prone to hacks. Also, another thing I don't really like is the frequent updates which can be tiring after a while

One of the best website managers out there

Opmerkingen: It has been a very good experience to get to know wordpress and use it. It has granted us a great tool to manage websites, blogs, communities and landing pages. There is a lot of tutorials and information around, you just have to have the will (and/or time) to keep updating.

Pluspunten:

WordPress is one of the best website managers and content creators. It has tons of templates, addins and is supported almost everywhere (even if you want to install it locally). We have used our website with WordPress for more than 4 years and everytime we need to update or upgrade it, is as simple as to look for a new template, create a backup, install the template and customize it a little bit and in less than a week (sometimes even days) we have it up and running

Minpunten:

The con I could find on Wordpress is that it can sometimes be difficult to keep an eye on the new versions of everything you install. There are updates for the theme, the addins, the plugins, the connectors, etc. What we have agreed to do is to always look to minimize the addons we select for our website to keep this controlable but there is always some antispam addin or comments addin you will eventually need. And sometimes, with the updates, you can get your site broken.

Wordpress Review

Opmerkingen: Overall, it has been a great experience. I found once you get over the learning curve it is a really powerful and great tool for developing websites. There are tons of options and I have found that there is a plugin for any type of website you are designing.

Pluspunten:

The biggest Pro for me is the Wordpress Community. I found that most of the time I can get on the Wordpress forums and get answers to my questions. Rarely have I found that my issues were unique. There always seems to be someone that had the problem before and has given a solution. When I have posted questions on different forums I usually get really good responses and people tend to follow through until the issue gets resolved.

Minpunten:

The amount of plugins in the Wordpress repository. I do find it frustrating sometimes trying to find a good plugin. There are a lot of choices and trying to test and figure out which are of good quality and one that aren't can be really time consuming. If there was a better way to review and rate the plugins that would be really great.

Easy for a novice

Opmerkingen: A really great tool for someone just starting out in building websites either for themselves or clients. Once you grasp the basics of how wordpress works, the rest is a breeze. Everything you could have as a question is answered on official and un official posts on youtube. The templates have saved me tons of time and added to the creative brain storming of site looks.

Pluspunten:

As a novice just over a year ago, I was able to get started and experiment in a safe offline environment before publishing content. Once I learnt about the hundreds of plugins that make each project magical, the sky became the limit. I absolutely love that you can make it as stunning or as subtle as you want.

Minpunten:

I am not a fan of the constant plugin updates. almost every week, there are a few plugins needing updates. I get nervous as in the back of my mind, updates may affect an already published site. So all my updates are prompted and not auto updating. I then review how critical the update is and then update as and when needed.

The best website software you can use - and it is free!

Opmerkingen: Wordpress allows anyone to start a website. From a simple blog to a v complicated Ecommerce site. Much better than any paid for hosted alternatives.

Pluspunten:

The wordpress community works together to continually improve the basic software to run any kind of website. The software is 100% free and together with a huge amount of free and paid for plugins / themes can be used for eccommerce / blogs you name it. There is also a huge network of users. This allows you find a solution to any problem you might have.

Minpunten:

Sometimes when there is a major update it will take a few weeks to get used to the new version. Sometimes there are compatibility issues with some plugins.

Self Hosted WordPress - King of Blogging Platforms

Opmerkingen: I have been using WordPress since last decade. I have tried in many webhosting providers. Possibly had Installed hundreds of Instances of WordPress for testing and live hosting, even few for customers also. It is a time saver and because of extensive availability of themes and plugins, you can create Unique websites for different business needs. Its really positive and helpful.

Pluspunten:

Most loved feature about WordPress.org is Easy of Deployment and Administration. You can simply install this software using single Click button on most of the Web Hosting environments. If you plan to install in your Local Machine, it is also simple. Just install PHP/MySQL using tool like XAMPP and rest is step by step guided. Next loved thing is the Customization available. Thousands of themes and plugins to extend the capabilities as required. Guess what, you can simply design your theme or plugin with simple knowledge of PHP. As being the Open Source and long running product, community support is indepth.

Minpunten:

One thing that Frustrates is the resource usage. WordPress uses most resource if compared amount other popular tools like Joomla & Drupal. If you are using in Shared Hosting environment, the performance of the website is slower as you start getting visitors.

From landing pages to a fully managed marketplace, WordPress is the best bet

Opmerkingen: I love WordPress and I've been using it for many years now, for personal websites and for my clients. This is a great and mature tool, easy to use and customize. And the most I like is that no matter what kind of website you are planing to make, out there you can find a theme and the plugins needed to make it happen.

Pluspunten:

The most I like about WordPress is the huge ecosystem built around it. With the core installation you can get a nice small website. But if you need additional features, you're covered with thousands and thousands of plugins and themes build for every single need you can imagine.

Minpunten:

In complex websites (e.g. a marketplace for courses for hundreds of students) you may need to install dozens of plugins, and this could impact your website performance. Of course, you can install another plugin to optimize your installation, but this could be a time-consuming trial and error process, and not always you get the best results. Besides, installing too many plugins increases your chances of incompatibility and security issues. Be aware of using too many plugins.

If you want it to do something you can make it do that something

Opmerkingen: It is important to understand that there are two primary versions of WordPress: publicly hosted (WordPress.com) and privately hosted (WordPress.org). The public one can be used for free and has a subscription option to get things like ad removal from your site, custom domain names, etc. the free version by default has ads on your site, limited customization, and your domain name will end with .wordpress.com. The privately hosted version of WordPress is completely free, however you will have to purchase your own hosting subscription and domain name. This version however, gives you 100% control over every aspect of your site. With the correct know how, you can make it do anything! Some people have built very lucrative businesses by setting up these sites for their customers, as I had done for a few years. I can honestly say that WordPress is my preferred Content Management Software by a long shot, and this is the version that I base my review on.

As one of the worlds most popular platforms for building a website, WordPress comes with an extremely vibrant and active support community. As a result, there is very little needed direct customer support. I have been able to either go to the WordPress forums, documentation pages, or even simply use Google to search for the issue or idea that I have and within minutes I usually have the answer that I'm looking for. WordPress is an extremely flexible platform: if you have an idea, you can do it. If you can't figure out how to, there's almost always a plugin for that, many of which are free. WordPress sites also tend to look great right out of the box. Every year the WordPress development team publish a new theme that comes pre-shipped in the installation (along with past years iterations), and they always look great! After that, there is a ridiculously large database of free themes. After all that, there's an excessive amount of plugins available, many of which are free, or have free versions available. if you want a calendar page on your site, there's some awesome plugins for that, or even simply embed your Google calendar. If you want to sell products on your site, WooCommerce is the fastest way to getting a very nice looking and efficient web shop up and running. And finally, if that's not enough, if you are familiar with a bit of coding (HTML, CSS, and PHP being the most relevant), then the sky is the limit.

Even with the tremendous amount of customization (and more so with knowledge), sites based on WordPress tend to start to feel all alike, to the extant that more experienced visitors to a WordPress site can instantly few when a site is based on this. Unless you have a notable grasp of programming, you will eventually feel limited by what you can do, and not everyone is willing or has the time to learn programming to compensate for this. For those who have stepped up and have the capacity to pick apart the code and make it do what you want, it's not uncommon to have to drop a few hours trying to find out where you went wrong after it's been broken. This isn't unusual when it comes to any kind of programming, but it seems like it's a bit more convoluted under the hood and difficult to pinpoint where exactly you went wrong - especially if you're using a custom theme purchased from someone online.

Built my entire business with Wordpress

Opmerkingen: My overall experience with WordPress is positive. It has always been my #1 recommendation to new bloggers and serious marketers online. My only hope is that Gutenberg will become less buggy over time.

I was a struggling college student when I first installed Wordpress on my cheap hosting. Back then I picked Wordpress because it was easy to install and open-source. I had a few technical skills and no money so that was the best CMS for my new website. The first blog was pretty basic, but it did the job. Thanks to WordPress, I eventually managed to build a small following by publishing blog posts on my website. Today, I continue to power all my sites with WordPress. Here's who I recommend WordPress for: - If your website is going to be content-heavy (i.e. you publish a lot of blog posts) - WordPress makes the job very easy. Formatting is easy, writing is easy, uploading media is easy... - People who have none or little technical skills - you're not a programmer but would like to have a professional looking website. There are lots of features and plugins on WordPress that allows you to drag and drop elements on your site so you don't have to touch a line of code if you don't want to! - People looking to MVP SaaS projects - this is relatively new for me but I've noticed tons of people making money by building simple SaaS on top of WordPress. It's gonna save you a ton of time and money building your MVP on WordPress compared to other platforms.

I've always loved WordPress but the one thing I'm having mixed feelings about is Gutenberg. It has been working quite well for me for the last couple of months and I've been loving the ease of using it, but since the latest update, the entire thing lags when I write. This really sucks for me and I think I have to switch back to the 'Classic Editor'. Could be a theme issue, but I've converted almost all my new posts to Gutenberg format now I don't know if I remove Gutenberg what would happen to the formatting on my posts.

The best option for any web development project

Opmerkingen: I personally prefer WordPress.org for all my web development needs. Not only is the installation quick and painless, but the level of control is exactly what I like to ave (and what my web development clients like to take with them). WordPress installations are also easily migrated, so it's easy to develop a website in a test environment before launching it publicly on a live domain. Overall, the amount of time saved compared to hand-coding an entire website is invaluable!

Pluspunten:

WordPress.com offers a simple setup process and allows you to focus on your website's contents; without having to worry at all about managing a host server, performing regular backups and maintenance, implementing and monitoring security measures, etc. WordPress handles all the technical heavy lifting for you for peace of mind. For the most tech savvy, WordPress.org offers an independent installation of the content management system so you can implement it on your own custom domain and web hosting account/server. While offering a much more powerful implementation that also allows for in-depth customization by the user(s), there are "easy install" options offered on many hosting providers to allow for a speedier installation process of the WordPress.org platform. Various free and pay-for third party plugins are available for just about any feature or capability you wish to add or improve to your WordPress installation (front-end or back-end). A limited set of plugins and themes are available to WordPress.com users, but the entire catalog of plugins and themes is available to WordPress.org users and all are easy to install and maintain (though usability may vary in ease of use).

WordPress.com does not allow for full control by the user(s). However, this is done for reliable uptime and security of your website. WordPress.org does require a higher level of comfortability using a cloud-based resources. With that said though, posting/editing posts and pages is no more difficult than using a local installation of Microsoft Word on your computer, or a cloud based word processing tool like G Suite/Google Docs. I do recommend at least one user have somewhat of a deeper understanding of web development, web hosting, HTML/CSS, etc. While these skills are not necessary, they can be very beneficial in certain circumstances.

Best Web Platform Available and Worth the Learning Curve

If you require a blog that you'd like to customize or monetize, you need Wordpress.
If you have require a business website that outranks competitors on Google search, you need Wordpress.
There are few cases that I would recommend a different platform.

This review is about Wordpress.org, not Wordpress.com which is the free site (they have paid versions too though). I've built over a hundred sites with Wordpress. I've also built them from scratch in PHP and HTML, and with Wix and Squarespace, so I do have experience with the gamut of web design. Wordpress is by far the most versatile and widely used web design platform out there. Because it is so ubiquitous, it has the most available resources. There are thousands of themes so you don't have to create your site from a blank canvas. Many of these are free and those that do cost usually are very inexpensive. Plugins like Yoast that help your site's search engine optimization or plugins like Redirect which allow you to fix broken links or redirect a page you no longer want attracting traffic to a new page. And then there's the overall SEO of the site, which is where Wordpress truly excels over any other platform. Wordpress structures it's pages and posts in such a way that if you're willing to take advantage of it, Google will reward the site with a higher ranking. Also, Wordpress, unlike competitor platforms like Wix or Squarespace, is free! Many of the themes and most of the plugins are free too.

Wordpress doesn't have many cons, but here are the few: • Domain registry and hosting is handled separately, by you. • Customizing your site can definitely be challenging. It's not as easy as the competitor platforms. • Site speed can be slow when you want to have a lot of background video. It's slow on any platform, but with Wordpress, it's extra slow. Only with excessive video background though, not at all in other cases.

Opmerkingen: I have created many websites for my self and clients with WordPress. Its great for getting potential clients to take the plunge into conducting business online who have no idea how to get started or any experience with internet marketing. Being able to assure a potential client that they will be able to easily update their websites with little to no assistance beyond creating the original site setup. People love the simplicity of it all and that helps me sell more often and more successfully to people who fear the complexity of online marketing but want to try it out.

I love that you can use WordPress to accomplish almost anything related to building a website. Word press is a program that can out of the box build a fully function website or be modified to accomplish most tasks you normally have to spend time writing line after line of code. Its great having a program the you can acquire and use for free or nearly free that can do so much. Once you setup how you want WordPress to display your website you can easily create new content for your website with no more than few clicks. You can rearrange elements on your website with something as simple as drag and dropping if you want to. WordPress takes what would be hours of coding and cuts it down to minutes, but what really makes WordPress stand out is how easy it is to add functionality with plugins. It is so simple that to add a plugin you merely have to go to the plugin section that you can find right on the dashboard main screen and type what ever you are looking for into a search bar and then its as simple as picking what plugin bets meets your needs and there are literally 1000s plugins that you can choose from for any given need you my find your self wanting fulfilled.

I am freelance Web Developer and from my perspective WordPress is probably the most changeable and easy to personalize program available for free that is easy to learn how to use, but if I had to say something negative the only thing I can say really is that on its own it can feel limited but like I said before. You can easily change how WordPress works by customizing with plugins that you can install will no more than a few clicks a little time spend familiarizing your self with how the plugin works. So even though WordPress may be limited to start with you can easily fix that by spend a few minutes adding the plugins you need.

My Experience with WordPress
